Week 1 Introduction Post

 Hi everyone!

My name is Elisabeth and I am a third year psychology student. This is my first time taking a literature course at UBC and I am so far very intrigued by both the content and the nature of the course! I love that this course allows us to have some independence in what we want to read and the goals we want to set for ourselves. Though I enjoy reading, I find that with a full course load during the semester it's hard to find the time to sit down and read, so I'm looking forward to this being a part of my work this term. Through looking over the course readings I'm intrigued by their content and that we have the ability to contrast them and draw connections between each week.

In terms of what I'm expecting about this course… I think I'm expecting lots of things to be very new to me. I've taken a few online courses in which our means of communication was weekly blog posts, however I've never done a course quite like this where we combine in class learning with posts to this blog. This is both exciting and a little nerve-racking as it's all very new.

I also expect the readings to be both long and interesting. Being a psych major I find that my course readings are often limited to academic articles and papers. Though it can be interesting to learn about past studies, the idea of reading books and literature is exciting to me. I sadly don't think I know enough about Latin American literature to give any pre-course insight or predictions on the readings. However, from an outside perspective I do think these readings are going to be long, which I certainly need to focus on. I think in our busy lives it's easy to close our laptops once we finish work and go straight to yet another screen to relax and scroll through the internet. As I know the term picks up very fast and it is easy to fall behind schedule on things, one of my plans for staying on top of course content this term is to try my best to “romanticize” doing course readings. I think that this will be beneficial as many of the readings already look interesting and additionally we get to choose ones that further grab our attention.

I am curious to know what methods or tactics you guys use to stay on top of course work and readings?

I'm really looking forward to taking this course with you all and reading your introductions and thoughts on our upcoming posts!

  1. Hi Elisabeth! I can totally relate to you being a psychology student myself in terms of the types of readings we are assigned. In terms of what methods or tactics ill use to stay on top of my readings, im not sure yet. I think it will vary based on the amount of free time i have throughout the week, or perhaps how much im enjoying the content.
